Cadaveric Knee Replacement Workshop Held at IGIMS, Patna

Patna: A Cadaveric Knee Replacement Workshop was conducted by the Departments of Orthopaedics and Anatomy at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna. The event offered hands-on training to orthopaedic doctors and students, focusing on the intricacies of knee replacement surgery.

Dr. Wasim Ahmed, Additional Professor and Convener Secretary, noted that the workshop featured live demonstrations by Professor Dr. R.K. Arya from RML, New Delhi, and Dr. B.D. Chatterjee, Senior Physician from Apollo Hospital, Kolkata. Under their expert guidance, participants practiced surgical techniques on cadavers, gaining valuable insights into this complex procedure.

Dr. Santosh Kumar, Head of Orthopaedics and Convener Chairman of the workshop, highlighted the importance of such training in mastering knee replacement surgery. He explained that knee transplantation is crucial for patients suffering from severe pain and mobility issues due to arthritis. He also emphasised that most patients can resume walking within three to four days of a successful surgery.

Dr. Manish Mandal, Medical Superintendent at IGIMS, underscored the institute’s efforts in providing affordable knee replacement surgeries, benefiting patients from Bihar and neighbouring states. Dr. Avnish Kumar, Head of Anatomy, played a key role in arranging cadavers for the workshop, ensuring its success.

The event was further supported by Joint Secretary Dr. Nishant Kashyap, Dr. Indrajit Kumar, and Dr. Vidyasagar. Notable attendees included the institute’s director, Dr. Binde Kumar, who encouraged the continuation of such workshops, as well as Dean Dr. Om Kumar and Principal Dr. Ranjit Guha. The workshop saw participation from hundreds of doctors and students from various medical institutes, making it a resounding success.
