Patna: The Patna Traffic Police have announced a crackdown on the misuse of car sunroofs, particularly the act of passengers protruding their heads or torsos while vehicles are in motion. This initiative aims to curb dangerous behaviors that have become increasingly prevalent on city roads.
According to officials, such actions violate Sections 177 and 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which pertain to general offences and dangerous driving, respectively. Violators may face summonses and monetary fines. The enforcement will be supported by surveillance through CCTV cameras installed across the city.
Traffic authorities have observed that individuals, especially youths, often engage in this risky behavior on less congested roads like JP Ganga Path and Atal Path. These acts are frequently recorded and shared on social media platforms, sometimes involving stunts that endanger both the occupants and other road users.
To illustrate the potential hazards, the police conducted a demonstration using a 2.5-kilogram dummy placed through a car’s sunroof. The exercise highlighted how sudden braking could cause a person to be ejected from the vehicle, leading to severe injuries or fatalities.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Alok Kumar emphasized the seriousness of the issue, stating that any life-threatening or hazardous stunts involving sunroofs would result in legal action. All traffic personnel have been instructed to monitor and report such violations diligently.
While sunroofs are designed to enhance ventilation and provide emergency exits, their misuse poses significant safety risks. The Patna Traffic Police urge all motorists and passengers to adhere to traffic regulations and prioritize safety over thrill-seeking behaviors.
