Bihar Discusses Adoption of Flood Plain Zoning to Mitigate Flood Damage

Patna: A central team, led by Parth Sarathi, Joint Secretary of the Home Department, is on a two-day visit to Bihar to evaluate the damage caused by recent floods. The seven-member team met with Bihar Chief Secretary Amritlal Meena, along with senior officials from various departments involved in flood relief efforts. The Disaster Management Department of Bihar presented a detailed report on the extent of the damage.

The team has been divided into two groups for the assessment. One group is inspecting the damage in Sitamarhi, while the other is assessing the situation in Darbhanga. Their evaluation will focus on crop losses, livestock deaths, and human casualties in the affected districts. The findings will be submitted to the Centre for further action.

The Bihar government has requested Rs 3,638.51 crore from the central government to aid recovery efforts. This follows the initial distribution of Rs 605 crore to affected families in two phases. In the first phase, Rs 225 crore was transferred to flood-hit individuals in the Kosi, Gandak, and Bagmati regions, while the second phase saw Rs 532.22 crore distributed to over 7 lakh families affected by the Ganga, Gandak, and Bagmati rivers.

The central team’s report will determine the allocation of additional funds to support recovery efforts in the flood-affected areas of Bihar.
