
Patna: Citizens who save the lives of road accident victims by providing immediate assistance will now receive a reward of Rs 25,000 under the Rahveer Yojana, which has been extended by the central government till March 31, 2026. The scheme aims to encourage Good Samaritans to assist seriously injured people on roads without fear or hesitation.
Announcing this during a meeting of the Bihar Road Safety Council at the Chief Secretariat, Transport Minister Sheela Kumari said road safety is among the top priorities of the state government. “Every life on the road has a price and we do not want to lose even a single life. All departments must work with dedication and coordination to prevent road accidents,” she said.
The meeting reviewed department-wise progress on road safety initiatives by stakeholders including Path Nirman, Transport, Rural Works, Education, Health, Home, Urban Development and Housing departments, and the NHAI.
Additional Chief Secretary of the Transport Department Mihir Kumar Singh informed that currently, Good Samaritans are honoured with Rs 10,000 and a citation by the state Transport Department. The new scheme by the Centre will provide Rs 25,000 to vigilant citizens who assist victims. Further, each year 10 best Rahveers at the national level will be awarded Rs 1,00,000, a citation, and a felicitation ceremony.
He added that a multi-dimensional strategy is underway to reduce accidents, including black spot identification, faster ambulance availability, road safety education, driver training, and stricter enforcement of helmet and seat belt usage.
The council also discussed cashless treatment up to Rs 1,50,000 for accident victims in hospitals, public awareness campaigns, strengthening emergency medical services, construction of traffic parks in divisional headquarters districts, dedicated driving schools for women in eight districts, renovation of Bihar State Road Transport Corporation bus stops, and automatic testing stations in 15 districts.
The meeting was attended by Additional Director General of Police Sudhanshu Kumar, Deputy Inspector General of Home Guard Corps cum Fire Brigade Sudhir Kumar Porika, Excise Commissioner Rajneesh Kumar, and senior officials of the Transport Department.
