Centre to Set Up Nuclear Power Plant in Bihar, Says Energy Minister Khattar

Patna: Union Minister for Energy, Manohar Lal Khattar, on Tuesday announced that Bihar will soon be home to a nuclear power plant, marking a significant development in the state’s energy landscape. Addressing Regional Power Ministers Conference (Eastern Region) in Patna, the minister confirmed that the Centre has approved one of six proposed small modular nuclear reactors for installation in Bihar.
Khattar stated that the central government is fully committed to supporting the Bihar government in executing this ambitious project. “India’s growing energy demands call for innovative and sustainable solutions,” he said. “We are planning to set up small modular reactors across the country, and Bihar will be one of the first to benefit from this initiative.”

He further noted that while the Bihar government will oversee the establishment of the nuclear plant, the Centre will extend complete technical and logistical support to ensure its success.
Officials from the Ministry of Power described the announcement as a “transformational step” that will not only enhance the state’s power generation capacity but also generate employment and boost local development. They believe the project could position Bihar as a future hub for clean and advanced energy infrastructure.
The decision is part of a broader push by the central government to diversify India’s energy mix and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. If implemented as planned, the nuclear plant in Bihar could serve as a model for similar projects across the country.
