Chausa Battlefield in Buxar Restored as Bihar Aims to Revive Forgotten Chapter of History

The historic battlefield of Chausa in Bihar’s Buxar district, where Sher Shah Suri defeated Mughal emperor Humayun in 1539, has been restored and beautified with Rs 2.65 crore by the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation.

Patna: The historic battlefield of Chausa in Bihar’s Buxar district, site of the pivotal 1539 clash between Sher Shah Suri and Mughal emperor Humayun, has undergone a major restoration and beautification effort under the state’s Tourism Department. With Rs 2.65 crore invested in the project, officials hope to transform the site into a prominent historical destination.

The Battle of Chausa, fought on 26 June 1539, marked a decisive moment in Indian history ushering in the short-lived but impactful Suri Empire and briefly halting Mughal ascendancy. Despite its significance, the site had remained largely neglected until recent years.

Credits to the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation, the grounds have been landscaped, and new infrastructure including a boundary wall, entrance gate, ticket room, and security guard facility have been completed. The initiative is part of a broader state-led effort to promote lesser-known heritage sites and strengthen Bihar’s cultural tourism appeal.

Officials say the improvements will allow for better visitor experience and heritage interpretation, with plans to introduce ticketed entry and enhanced on-site security. “Chausa is not just a battlefield, it’s a turning point in the subcontinent’s history,” a department spokesperson said. “By developing it responsibly, we aim to offer both education and engagement to tourists.”
