Patna: Farmers in the rice-producing districts of Buxar and Rohtas are set to benefit from improved irrigation this Kharif season, as the restoration and lining of the Chausa branch canal under the Son Canal System nears completion. With 88% of the work already finished, the scheme aims to ensure uninterrupted water supply across Nokha, Kargahar, Kochas and Dinara blocks in Rohtas district.

The Chausa canal project, which spans 62.67 kilometres and is being executed at a cost of Rs 79.53 crore, will help transport water to the tail ends of the Kochas and Indore distributaries. Once completed, it is expected to restore irrigation capacity to 4,065 hectares of agricultural land—bringing much-needed relief to farmers struggling with water shortages.

The canal, part of the Son Canal System, is a vital source of irrigation for the region, known as Bihar’s “rice bowl.” Officials have expressed confidence that the project will be completed ahead of the upcoming Kharif crop cycle, ensuring timely water access for paddy cultivation.
