Chhapra Authorities Ban Kite Flying and Picnics on Riverbanks Amid Safety Concerns
Chhapra: The Sonpur subdivision administration has introduced stringent measures to prevent accidents during the Makar Sankranti celebrations. A complete ban on boating has been imposed on the Ganga, Gandak, and Mahi rivers for 14 and 15 January, with exceptions only for administrative and rescue operations.
The decision follows the tragic 2017 boat accident, in which several lives were lost during Makar Sankranti festivities. Subdivisional Officer Ashish Kumar announced that picnics, kite flying, and public events would be strictly prohibited in the Sabalpur Diara area and other river islands.
In an additional safety measure, the sale of Chinese Manjha—known for its hazardous nature—has been banned across the subdivision. Local police have been directed to rigorously enforce the restrictions.
The steps come as crowds are expected to gather for the Khidki festival, a time when overloading of boats poses significant risks. Officials hope these measures will prevent accidents and ensure public safety during the celebrations.
