Chhapra: Thousands Gather for BSF SI Neeraj Pandey’s Final Journey
Chhapra: The atmosphere in Aliaspur village in Manjhi block turned sombre as the body of BSF SI Neeraj Pandey, who was posted in Kolkata, West Bengal, arrived. The village witnessed an outpouring of grief and solidarity as hundreds from neighbouring areas gathered to pay their respects.
As the convoy carrying the body made its way from Kolkata to Manjhi, it was met with a heartfelt welcome. Dozens of bike-riding youths from the village escorted the special BSF vehicle, chanting slogans like “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Neeraj Bhaiya Amar Rahe,” honoring the brave soldier.
Neeraj Pandey, son of Swaminath Pandey (retd JCO from the Army), passed away due to a heart attack on Sunday. His sudden demise left the family and the community in shock. On Monday, he was cremated with full state honors at the Manjhi crematorium. His son, Ayush Pandey, performed the last rites, lighting the funeral pyre. The BSF soldiers accompanying the body, draped in the tricolor, paid their final respects with an armed salute, firing six rounds into the air.
Neeraj Pandey had dedicated 31 years of his life to the BSF and was only seven years away from retirement. Just ten days prior to his death, he was promoted to the rank of Sub-Inspector, a moment of pride for his family, who celebrated with sweets. This promotion now stands as a poignant reminder of his dedication and service.
The four-kilometer-long funeral procession from Aliaspur to Manjhi was a testament to the love and respect the community held for Neeraj Pandey. Thousands of people joined the procession, reflecting the deep impact he had on those around him.
Neeraj Pandey is survived by his son Ayush Pandey, who is currently preparing for the UPSC exams, and his daughter, who is a teacher in Delhi. Both are unmarried.
