Chief Secretary Orders Urgent Heatwave Interventions Across Bihar
Patna: In response to the severe heatwave and continuous fatalities, the Bihar government has mandated all districts to ensure the availability of drinking water, provide protection from the heat, and offer medical treatment to those affected. The Chief Secretary of the state has directed all relevant departments to take necessary measures to combat the crisis.
Chief Secretary Brajesh Mehrotra stated that the Health Department has instructed hospitals at all levels, from primary health centres to medical college hospitals, to prepare for treating individuals suffering from heat-related illnesses.
Hospitals have been advised to create separate wards and make specific arrangements for patients affected by the heatwave. This includes maintaining an adequate supply of oral rehydration solution (ORS) and ensuring air conditioning in designated wards.
Mehrotra highlighted that the government is receiving daily updates from the districts, and all arrangements are being closely monitored.
The Chief Secretary also mentioned that the Public Health Engineering Department has been tasked with ensuring the provision of drinking water. This includes repairing hand pumps and supplying water from tanks in areas where hand pumps are non-functional.
The Urban Development Department and District Administration have been instructed to establish drinking water stalls in urban areas. The Animal Husbandry Department has been directed to attend to the health of animals, while the Information and Public Relations Department is responsible for raising public awareness on how to stay safe during the heatwave.
Additionally, Mehrotra announced that ex-gratia grants are being provided to the families of those who have died due to the heatwave, underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting affected citizens during this critical period.
