Patna: Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) president and Union Minister Chirag Paswan has written to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, urging a rollback of recent amendments to the state’s compensation process for road accident victims. Chirag described the new rules as “complex and troublesome,” claiming they deny families immediate financial relief during times of crisis.

In his letter, Chirag said the previous system—under which District Magistrates or Sub-Divisional Officers directly disbursed compensation—provided prompt support to grieving families. However, he argued that the new framework, which requires victims to approach the Motor Accident Claim Tribunal and deal with insurance companies, is overly technical and time-consuming.

“The family affected by an accident is already under immense emotional and financial strain,” Chirag wrote. “Making the compensation process more complicated in such circumstances is not only inhumane but also raises questions on the state government’s sensitivity.”

According to the amended rules, compensation is now to be recovered by the Transport Department from the vehicle owner or their insurer. Chirag warned that this shift in responsibility could erode public trust and leave victims waiting for months or even years before receiving any support.

Calling for a serious reconsideration, the LJP (Ram Vilas) leader appealed to the state government to reintroduce the older system to ensure timely aid and maintain public confidence.
