Patna: The JP Ganga Path, an ambitious riverside expressway project in Patna, is set to be extended to Didarganj, with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar scheduled to inaugurate the new stretch on Thursday. Constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 3,831 crore by the Bihar State Road Construction Corporation, the 20.5-km road links the city’s western and eastern edges—Digha and Didarganj—along the southern bank of the Ganges.
Currently operational from Digha to Kangan Ghat, the upcoming extension aims to significantly ease travel across Patna, connecting key locations such as Gandhi Maidan, PMCH, Patna University, NIT, Gaighat, and Patna Ghat. The project, named after Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan, was launched on his birth anniversary in October 2013 and has been developed in phases over the past decade.
The JP Ganga Path is emerging as a critical traffic artery in Patna, offering multi-dimensional connectivity for residents navigating the city’s most congested zones. Its strategic alignment with bridges such as the Mahatma Gandhi Setu and Digha-Sonepur rail-cum-road bridge also facilitates smoother movement between North and South Bihar.
During the Pragati Yatra in February, the state government approved additional features for the expressway, including a down ramp at Gaighat and direct access from Mandiri Nala. Future plans include linking the road to the six-lane Kachidargah–Bidupur bridge and extending the corridor from Bihta to Mokama via Koilwar, Fatuha and Bakhtiyarpur.
The Ganga Path will also integrate with the proposed Patna Ring Road and connect with major national highways—NH-922, NH-319—and the Purvanchal Expressway, further strengthening Bihar’s intra-state and inter-state road connectivity. A holistic garden is also planned between Digha and Gandhi Maidan as part of the riverfront development initiative.
