Darbhanga/ Patna: Darbhanga Airport in Bihar is set to see a significant boost in air connectivity, with new direct flights to Mumbai and Bengaluru expected to commence soon. The move has generated widespread excitement in Mithilanchal and northern Bihar, with residents welcoming the enhanced links to two of India’s major metropolitan hubs.
The announcement coincides with renewed efforts to develop Darbhanga Airport to international standards. Officials have confirmed that one additional flight each to Mumbai and Bengaluru will be introduced in the near future, addressing a long-standing demand from the region.
“This is a matter of great relief for travellers who had to rely on distant airports for metro-bound flights,” a local resident said. “Now we can reach major cities directly from our hometown.”
In parallel, the Bihar government has approved a substantial funding boost for the airport’s expansion. A sum of ₹245 crore has been sanctioned and transferred to the Darbhanga district administration to facilitate land acquisition for runway extension. The process involves acquiring around 90 acres of land, which will enable the airport to handle larger aircraft and increased passenger traffic.
JDU Rajya Sabha MP and party working president, Sanjay Kumar Jha, recently held high-level discussions with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, not only to expedite Darbhanga’s development but also to explore options for operationalising Purnea Airport.
