Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Wears Madhubani Saree, Drawing Attention to Bihar-Purvanchal Culture

New Delhi: Delhi’s newly sworn-in Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, wore a saree adorned with Madhubani paintings during her official meetings on Thursday, febraury 20. The saree, showcasing the vibrant art form associated with Bihar, was seen as a nod to the rich cultural heritage of the region.

The bright yellow saree, featuring a wide border with intricate Madhubani designs, was paired with a red blouse. The artwork, which has its origins in Bihar, also adorned the pallu of the saree, further emphasising the cultural symbolism behind the outfit.

Bihar BJP leaders quickly took to social media, sharing Gupta’s image on Instagram. The post highlighted the significance of the Madhubani painting as a representation of regional pride and cultural identity.

The Madhubani saree trend has been gaining prominence in Indian political circles. Earlier this month, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman wore a cream-coloured Madhubani saree while presenting the Union Budget for the eighth time on February 1. The saree, gifted to her by renowned artist Dulari from Bihar, sparked widespread attention for its cultural significance. Sitharaman had received the saree from Dulari during a visit to Madhubani in December and had promised to wear it for the Budget presentation. She paired the saree with a half-shoulder red blouse on the day of the presentation.
