Deputy CM Vijay Sinha Unveils Bihar’s Organic Farming Push Across 13 Districts

Patna: Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha on Friday reaffirmed the state’s commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture, unveiling plans for a comprehensive organic farming ecosystem that spans 13 districts.

At a press briefing, Sinha, who also holds the agriculture portfolio, said the state government’s corridor-based project focuses on boosting soil health, reducing chemical inputs, and enhancing farmer incomes through organic cultivation. “This project will not only protect the environment but also ensure economic empowerment for farmers,” he said.

The initiative, led by the Bihar State Seed and Organic Certification Agency (BSSOCA), provides C-1 certification to farmers, with efforts under way to expand to C-2 certification. Farmers are eligible for a subsidy of Rs 11,500 per acre for up to 2.5 acres to incentivise the switch to organic methods.

Support measures include assistance for branding, marketing, transportation, soil testing, training, and documentation. Innovations in e-commerce and agri-startups are also being encouraged as part of the wider programme.

“Organic farming is an ideal model that improves crop productivity, enhances soil health, and promotes environmentally-friendly agriculture. It can play a crucial role in combating global warming,” Sinha said.

The state is extending the Organic Farming Promotion Scheme to all 38 districts, with compost and biogas units being developed to support transition efforts. A model organic farm has been set up in Fatuha to demonstrate best practices and educate farmers.
