Drone Police Unit to Be Formed in Bihar to Curb Sand Smuggling and Liquor Mafia

Patna: A dedicated drone police unit will soon be established in Bihar Police, equipped with state-of-the-art drones for law enforcement, traffic management, and crime prevention. The Special Task Force (STF) will be the nodal agency overseeing this unit, which aims to strengthen operations against liquor and sand smuggling. The Bihar Police has sought assistance from Tamil Nadu Police, Uttarakhand Police, and the Air Force to develop this specialized unit.

The policemen and officials assigned to the drone police unit will receive specialized training in drone operations. They will also obtain drone pilot licenses to operate different categories of drones based on weight, including nano drones (less than 250 grams), micro drones (2 to 25 kg), medium drones (25 to 150 kg), and large drones (more than 150 kg). Currently, drones are being used in Diara regions to prevent illegal liquor production and sand mining.

On the occasion of Holi, the Prohibition, Excise, and Registration Department deployed drones to monitor hotels, restaurants, and roadside eateries in urban areas. This initiative helped authorities crack down on illegal activities during the festive period. The new drone unit is expected to enhance surveillance capabilities and enable quicker response to criminal activities.

Additionally, drones are already being utilized for security surveillance in large government programs and public events. Once the dedicated unit is operational, its services will be available under a defined Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), ensuring systematic and effective drone deployment across Bihar.
