Patna: A senior government officer was arrested on Thursday for arriving drunk at a public programme in Bihar. District Fisheries Officer Shambhu Kumar came in an intoxicated state during Fisherman’s Day celebrations where PHED Minister Neeraj Kumar Singh Bablu, District Magistrate Sawan Kumar, and other officials were present.
People noticed his strange behaviour on stage. District Magistrate Sawan Kumar ordered his medical test immediately. The test confirmed he had consumed alcohol. After registering a case, police sent him to the lockup from the event itself.
This is not the first time Shambhu Kumar has been caught drinking. Last year in March, he was arrested near Bhimnagar border while returning from Nepal after consuming liquor. He got bail from the court, and only minor departmental action was taken against him. He continued in his post despite breaking the law.
Bihar has a complete liquor ban, but such incidents show its poor implementation. A senior officer breaking the rules so openly questions the government’s seriousness on prohibition. People now want strict action against him to set an example for others.
