East Central Railway Transports 240 Million Passengers in a Record Year

Hajipur: East Central Railway (ECR) has reported a record-breaking year in passenger and freight transport, carrying over 240 million passengers in the financial year 2024-25—a 14.68% increase from the previous year. The regional railway also secured the highest passenger revenue growth rate across Indian Railways, generating Rs4,602 crore, a 12.56% rise from Rs4,088 crore in 2023-24.
In total, ECR earned Rs31,575 crore in 2024-25, making it the top-performing regional railway in India in terms of initial income. Freight operations also saw a significant boost, with 202.63 million tonnes transported, placing ECR among the top four regional railways in this category.
Investment in Passenger Comfort and Safety
Following these achievements, the Railway Board has announced upgrades to enhance passenger safety and convenience. By the end of 2025, 25 pairs of trains operated by ECR will be fitted with modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches, replacing older ICF rakes.
General Manager Chhatrasal Singh praised railway staff for their contributions and emphasized the importance of modernization efforts. “These milestones demonstrate our commitment to providing safer and more comfortable journeys for passengers,” he said. “The transition to LHB coaches is a significant step forward in ensuring better travel experiences.”
LHB Coaches: A Safer, Smoother Ride
LHB coaches, made from stainless steel, are lighter, stronger, and designed for higher speeds. Their anti-climbing features reduce derailment risks in accidents, while improved braking systems, better suspension, and modern interiors enhance passenger comfort.
Several key routes will see LHB rakes introduced this year, including the Dhanbad-Ranchi Express, Darbhanga-Amritsar Express, Patna-Bhabua Road Express, Kolkata-Muzaffarpur Express, and Secunderabad-Darbhanga Express.
The modernization of ECR’s train fleet is expected to improve safety standards and travel conditions, reinforcing the region’s status as a critical hub in India’s railway network.
