Extreme Heat Grips Bihar as Meteorological Department Issues Red Alerts
Patna: As Bihar battles scorching temperatures, with the capital city of Patna experiencing its hottest day of the season, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded alarm bells by issuing red alerts for multiple districts, signaling severe heatwave conditions until May 2.
Tuesday saw Patna sweltering at a staggering 42.8 degrees Celsius, underscoring the intensity of the heatwave gripping the region. With Wednesday forecasted to be equally blistering, the department has issued warnings for 17 districts, with red alerts designated for three districts and orange alerts for 14 others.
The impact of the relentless heatwave is evident as daily life faces disruption, compounded by the searing north-westerly winds amplifying the discomfort for residents.
Purnia, Sheikhpura, and Bhagalpur are under red alert status, while Muzaffarpur, Sheohar, Supaul, and several others are under orange alert due to extreme heat.
In response to the alarming forecast, the IMD has advised against agricultural activities between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, highlighting the risk of reduced crop productivity amidst rising temperatures and shifting climate patterns. Farmers are urged to prioritize irrigation for maize and vegetables and conduct soil tests post-Rabi crop harvest.
Additionally, livestock farmers are cautioned to protect their animals from the heat, advising against daytime grazing and ensuring shelter in shaded, well-ventilated areas. Adjusting feed schedules to early mornings and evenings and modifying fodder composition are recommended measures.
Looking ahead, the IMD’s forecast for the coming days indicates a continuation of severe conditions, with red alerts extended to districts including Gopalganj, Purnia, and Patna on May 2, followed by orange and yellow alerts for subsequent days, indicating the persistence of extreme heatwave conditions.
The escalating temperatures underscore the urgent need for proactive measures to mitigate the impact of the heatwave on both agricultural activities and public health.
