Patna : The Bihar government is moving forward with a plan to build foot overbridges (FOBs) and underpasses near schools, colleges, and hospitals across the state in an effort to curb road accidents and improve pedestrian safety.

The initiative, spearheaded by the state’s Transport Department, follows a recent review meeting in which district reports highlighted growing concerns about overcrowding near educational and medical institutions. Many of these areas see frequent instances of people crossing busy roads without proper infrastructure, leading to an increased risk of accidents.

To address the issue, the government has directed all districts to conduct detailed surveys of high-traffic zones near schools, colleges, hospitals, and religious places. These surveys will help identify critical spots where pedestrian infrastructure is urgently required.

The department will categorise accident-prone areas into two levels — “serious” and “very serious” — based on the frequency and severity of incidents. Based on these findings, locations will be prioritised for the construction of FOBs or underpasses, with the work set to begin in a phased manner.

A dedicated team of officers is being formed to oversee the classification process and ensure timely implementation. Officials have also been asked to include religious sites in their assessments, following reports of heightened accident risks in these areas as well.
