Gaya: A team of scientists from the Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun arrived in Bodh Gaya on Tuesday to carry out a routine health inspection of the sacred Bodhi tree at the Mahabodhi Temple complex.
Led by Dr Santan Bharthwal and Dr Shailesh Pandey, the team conducted a thorough examination of the tree’s main trunk and foliage. The scientists concluded that the Bodhi tree, revered in Buddhist tradition as the site where Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment, remains in robust health. Its leaves were found to be green and vibrant, with no signs of stress or deterioration.
During the inspection, a few minor infections were detected on some smaller branches. These were promptly pruned and removed to prevent any potential spread. In addition, light traces of mealybug infestation—common at the onset of the monsoon season—were observed on select branches.
To address the issue, a targeted pest control treatment was administered under the supervision of the FRI scientists. They emphasised that the measures were precautionary and designed to ensure the long-term well-being of the tree.
“A dry and infected branch was also removed to prevent any adverse effect on the healthier parts of the tree,” a member of the team said.
