From Patna to New York: A NIFT Student’s Transformative Year at FIT

Shristi Deep
Coming to the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), New York, as part of a one-year exchange program from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), has been an incredible journey of learning and self-discovery. With a strong foundation in textile design from NIFT Patna, I was eager to explore how a different academic and cultural environment could influence my design approach. FIT provided just that—a fresh perspective, exposure to new methodologies, and the chance to learn from talented peers and experienced faculty.
Adjusting to an entirely new college environment in a fast-paced city like New York was initially challenging, but it helped me grow tremendously. The rigorous academic schedule at FIT was demanding, yet it pushed me to become more efficient and adaptable. I quickly realised that balancing creativity with practicality is crucial, no matter where you are—India or the USA.
One of the most rewarding parts of this experience has been the exposure to diverse design perspectives. I have classmates from different age groups, backgrounds, and cultures. Working alongside them made me realise how deeply creativity is shaped by personal experiences.
The faculty at FIT played a significant role in shaping my learning. Gaining insights into real-world industry practices from professors who have worked in the field offered a deeper understanding of how the textile market functions in the United States from a global standpoint.
Beyond academics, simply being in New York City is an experience in itself. Museums like The Met and MoMA exposed me to various forms of art, while neighbourhoods such as SoHo and Chelsea, with their galleries and designer boutiques, helped me keep pace with current trends. The city is always buzzing—with pop-up shops, art installations, and sample sales—making even casual walks through its streets exciting. Whether wandering through Central Park, strolling the High Line (my personal favourite), or navigating the bustling avenues, every moment offered something new.
Living here has also helped me adjust to the fast-paced lifestyle of New York, making me more independent and resilient. The city’s energy can be overwhelming at times, but as I settled in, its rhythm became familiar. Making a few good friends definitely eased the transition, though the process still came with its own set of challenges.
Reflecting on my journey so far, I feel deeply grateful for the opportunity to merge my education at NIFT with the experiences gained at FIT. Throughout the exchange program, I have learned a wide range of textile development techniques. More importantly, this experience has sharpened my technical skills while nurturing my creativity and problem-solving abilities.
