Garbage Dump Near Civil Surgeon’s Office To Be Shifted Over Patna Airport Safety Concerns

Patna: The Patna Municipal Corporation has decided to relocate a secondary garbage dumping site adjacent to the Civil Surgeon’s office in Gardanibagh, citing security concerns linked to Patna airport. The move follows a recent safety inspection prompted by the Ahmedabad plane crash, which highlighted the threat posed by scavenging birds—particularly eagles and crows—attracting themselves to the waste and increasing the risk of mid-air bird strikes.

Municipal Commissioner Animesh Parashar confirmed that all paperwork for the relocation has been completed and that physical shifting will begin soon. The existing site, used for plastic waste segregation, currently sends residual garbage to the Bairia dumping yard. However, given its proximity to the airport and vital public institutions like Gardanibagh Hospital, the Civil Surgeon’s office, Bapu Tower and surrounding residential societies, authorities deemed it a hazard.

“The secondary garbage dumping point in Gardanibagh is being shifted to the Yarpur area of Mithapur,” said Parashar. “We expect the relocation to be completed within one to one-and-a-half months, after which the current site will be fully cleaned and sanitised.”

The plastic waste disposal centre currently operating at the Gardanibagh site will also be moved. The municipal body plans to replicate the process used to shift a similar garbage dumping point near AN College.
