Patna: The the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has announced the launch of a new annual FASTag pass priced at Rs 3,000 aimed at reducing congestion at toll plazas and streamlining digital payments across the country’s national highway network. The pass, which will be available from August 15, 2025 is intended for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, SUVs, and vans. It will remain valid for either one year or up to 200 toll transactions, whichever is reached first.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, made the announcement via a post on X (formerly Twitter), saying the initiative is part of broader efforts to promote smoother vehicular movement on highways.
The FASTag system, which uses RFID technology to automatically deduct toll charges, was made mandatory for all vehicles in 2021. However, concerns remain over long queues at toll booths during peak travel times, prompting the push for more efficient alternatives. Officials claim the new pass will encourage more drivers to adopt digital toll systems and could significantly ease congestion at toll plazas, particularly during holiday seasons and weekends. Further details about the rollout process and where the annual passes can be purchased are expected to be released closer to the launch date.
