Heat and Dirty Water Kill Thousands of Fish in Gayaji’s Suryakund

The holy pond in Gaya is filled with dead fish as heat and pollution take over, while officials remain silent.

Gayaji: Thousands of fish have died in the famous Suryakund pond in Gayaji, Bihar, over the last few days. The pond is located in the sacred Vishnupad area and is known for its religious importance. Locals say the fish are dying due to extreme heat and dirty water. On Monday, people saw hundreds of dead fish floating on the surface. Some live fish were also seen struggling to breathe.

Sanjay Malakar, a flower seller near the pond, said fish have been dying for the past two to three days, but most of them died on Monday. He believes the main reason is the dirty water, not just the heat. “The water is so filthy now, we can’t even touch it,” he said. Another local, Chhotu Gurda, added that the pond water has become poisonous in the last few days.

Sanitation workers from the Municipal Corporation are trying to clean the pond by removing dead fish. A worker named Sikandar said they are removing 15 to 20 buckets of fish every day. Another cleaner, Savita, said that even more fish died on Monday than on Sunday.

Suryakund is an important religious site. Devotees use its water for rituals like Chhath Puja and Pinddaan, a ceremony to offer prayers for ancestors. Many people visit this pond throughout the year. Locals are angry that the government only pays attention during major festivals and ignores the pond the rest of the time. If the situation continues, the pond may soon have no fish left.
