Heatwave Grips Bihar, Yellow Alert Issued; Thunderstorm, Rain Likely from April 26

Patna: Large parts of Bihar are reeling under scorching heat as heatwave conditions continue to prevail due to soaring temperatures and westerly winds. The mercury has climbed several degrees above normal, making daily life difficult for residents across the state.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Patna Centre, hot day conditions coupled with heatwave-like situations were reported in many districts on Thursday. Patna recorded a maximum temperature of 41.4°C, over 4 degrees above normal, while Gaya remained the hottest at 42.6°C for the second consecutive day. The heatwave effect was also pronounced in Supaul and peaked in Motihari.
Yellow Alert for Heatwave in Six Districts
A yellow alert has been issued for heatwave conditions in parts of East Champaran, Supaul, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Gopalganj, and Bhagalpur over the next 24 hours. Residents in these districts have been advised to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
In addition, 22 cities, including Patna, are expected to experience hot and humid weather. Strong surface winds of 50-60 kmph are likely at some locations, increasing discomfort.
Rain and Thunderstorm Forecast Between April 26–30
Relief, however, may be on the horizon. Meteorologists predict a change in weather beginning in two days, with the activation of easterly winds likely to bring thunderstorms and light rain across most parts of the state between April 26 and 30.
On April 26, a warning has been issued for heavy rain and thunderstorms in seven northern districts: East Champaran, Kishanganj, Araria, Supaul, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, and Madhubani. These areas may experience catastrophic rain and lightning activity, prompting authorities to remain on alert.
Rising Temperatures Across Cities
Besides Patna and Gaya, rising temperatures were observed in several other cities over the last 24 hours:
- Buxar: +1.4°C
- Banka: +1.7°C
- Patna: +0.2°C
- Aurangabad: +0.2°C
- Arwal: +0.2°C
- Bhojpur: +0.4°C
- Katihar: +0.4°C
- Munger: +0.8°C
Meanwhile, Chhapra, Muzaffarpur, Jiradei, Samastipur, Darbhanga, Madhubani, and Madhepura reported relatively stable temperatures.
Authorities have advised citizens to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, and follow safety guidelines issued by the health and disaster management departments.
