Purnia: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Pragati Yatra has ushered in a series of development projects for Purnia division, aiming to boost industrial growth, enhance flood protection, and expand educational infrastructure. The initiatives, covering the districts of Purnia, Katihar, Kishanganj, Araria, and Bhagalpur, are expected to directly benefit millions of residents, creating employment opportunities, strengthening disaster resilience, and improving access to higher education.
Industrial expansion to generate employment
A major focus of the Pragati Yatra has been on accelerating industrial development across Purnia division. New industrial zones will be established in Katihar and Kishanganj, promoting small and medium enterprises, while special financial aid and training centres will be introduced to support startups.
Purnia and Bhagalpur are set to become industrial hubs, with the necessary infrastructure for businesses and manufacturing units. These efforts are expected to stimulate economic growth and create thousands of job opportunities in the region.
Flood protection through embankment projects
Large parts of Purnia division are prone to severe flooding, which devastates farmlands and displaces local communities every year. To address this, the state government has announced embankment projects along key rivers in the region. The construction of robust embankments is expected to provide long-term flood protection, safeguarding agricultural land and villages from recurring disasters.
According to CM Nitish, this initiative is a major step towards climate resilience, ensuring stability for the region’s agrarian economy and improving the livelihoods of thousands of farmers.
New medical and engineering colleges to improve education
The Chief Minister also announced a medical college for Purnia, aimed at improving healthcare services and providing students with opportunities for advanced medical education. A similar medical institution is planned for Araria, expanding access to medical training in the region.
In Kishanganj, an engineering college will be set up, giving students more options for technical education. Additionally, the government has proposed a foot-over bridge in Kishanganj to enhance pedestrian safety and ease traffic congestion.
For sports enthusiasts, Araria will receive a new sports ground, encouraging youth participation in athletics and outdoor activities.
As part of efforts to promote religious tourism, the Kamakhya temple in Purnia division will be granted state fair status. This designation is expected to bring improved infrastructure and better facilities for pilgrims, boosting local tourism and the regional economy.
Path to a developed Bihar
Emphasizing inclusive and sustainable development, CM Nitish stated that these measures would transform Purnia division into a centre for industrial, educational, and economic progress. More than three crore residents stand to benefit, with enhanced employment prospects, disaster resilience, and improved educational infrastructure.
Several projects have already received cabinet approval, and administrative officers have been tasked with ensuring transparency and timely execution.
