Patna: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) [JD (U)] and Union minister Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) [LJP (RV)] have faced a crushing defeat in the Delhi elections, with both parties failing to secure the seats allocated to them by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won both Burari and Deoli, defeating JD (U) and LJP (RV) respectively. In Burari, AAP’s Sanjeev Jha defeated JD (U) candidate Shailendra Kumar by around 14,000 votes. In Deoli, a reserved constituency, AAP’s Prem Chauhan defeated LJP (RV) candidate Deepak Tanwar by a margin of approximately 37,000 votes.
The BJP had allocated these two seats to JD (U) and LJP (RV) in an effort to appeal to Purvanchali voters in Delhi. However, despite aggressive campaigning by JDU and LJP leaders, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) failed to make an impact in these constituencies.
Although initial trends showed NDA candidates leading, the final results went in AAP’s favour. The BJP, however, performed strongly across the rest of Delhi. The defeat of NDA allies in Purvanchal-dominated seats has raised fresh questions about the political landscape ahead of the Bihar assembly elections.
