JD (U) Working President Sanjay Jha Urges MSP, Insurance for Makhana Farmers in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi/ Patna: JD(U) working president and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Kumar Jha on Monday raised the issue of Makhana cultivation in the Upper House, urging the central government to fix a minimum support price (MSP) for the crop. Speaking during Zero Hour, he called for procurement through cooperative institutions and the inclusion of Makhana farming in the crop insurance scheme.

Jha highlighted the challenges faced by Makhana farmers, stressing the need for financial security to shield them from losses. He advocated for the formation of a Makhana Board, arguing that it would improve farmers’ livelihoods and create employment by boosting domestic and international sales. He reiterated his demand through a video message on social media platform X.

The call for a Makhana Board aligns with an earlier announcement by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the general budget. The initiative has gained momentum, with the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare allocating Rs 100 crore for its establishment.

Darbhanga MP and BJP Lok Sabha Whip Gopal Jee Thakur had recently stated that steps were already underway to formalize the board. He emphasized that Makhana cultivation could become a key source of employment and income for Bihar’s youth, particularly in the Mithila region. Thakur also recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi presenting Mithila Makhana—hailed as a superfood—to Mauritius President Dharma Gokul, calling it a proud moment for the people of Mithila.Top of Form
