Katihar/ Patna: In a dramatic breakthrough, Katihar police have recovered 77 kilograms of stolen silver and 900 grams of gold from a garbage heap in the Barsoi area of the district, following the arrest of a gang of seven alleged thieves.
According to Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Sharma, the heist took place on the night of April 3 when thieves broke into the home of Amit Kumar Jain, located near Jain Mandir Road in Barsoi Bazaar, by cutting through iron rods on the roof. Acting swiftly on the complaint, Barsoi police launched an investigation and, based on intelligence inputs, detained two suspects—Shyam Soni and Yasir—from Ras Chowk.

Interrogation of the duo led to the arrest of five more individuals: Ashraful, Akbar alias Sukia, Firoz, Vaibhav Anil Patil, and Samarul Haque. Police found that the stolen jewellery had been sold or pledged at local shops, including those owned by Patil and Jain. Based on information provided by Patil, police also recovered an additional 4.2 kg of silver.
The gang, reportedly active for the past three months, is believed to be involved in multiple theft cases. Ashraful, Samarul Haque and Akbar alias Sukia have prior criminal records. The breakthrough came when police, on routine patrol, noticed a youth fleeing suspiciously and gave chase. His capture led to the unravelling of the gang’s operations.
All seven accused have been remanded to judicial custody following medical examinations. Investigations are ongoing to determine if more individuals or stolen goods are linked to the case.
