Kaimur: A labourer in Bihar’s Kaimur district died in a gruesome accident on Sunday after a high-tension electric wire snapped and struck him, severing his head from his body.
The incident occurred near Shanti Netralaya in the Chainpur police station area while 30-year-old Rajendra Ram, a resident of Rupapatti village, was riding a bicycle to Jagaria for work. The 11,000-volt wire became entangled around his neck, resulting in his death on the spot.
Angered by the incident, family members and local residents blocked the Chainpur–Dharauli main road, demanding compensation of Rs 10 lakh. The protest was called off only after the police station in-charge, Vijay Prasad, assured compensation under government provisions. The body was sent to Sadar Hospital for post-mortem.
The electricity board later handed over a cheque of Rs 4 lakh to the deceased’s wife, Shakuntala Devi. Shashikant Kumar, the board’s executive engineer, confirmed that the wire broke due to a fault in the dis-insulator and stated that regular maintenance is conducted to avoid such accidents.
He added that a departmental investigation would be launched to determine accountability. Meanwhile, the victim’s family has alleged gross negligence by the electricity department and is demanding strict action against those responsible.
