Patna: The SKM Hall in Patna resonated with celebratory fervor as the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), led by former Bihar CM Lalu Prasad and Tejashwi Yadav, commemorated the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna Jannayak Karpoori Thakur. The event, inaugurated by Lalu, gathered leaders such as Jagdanand Singh, Shivanand Tiwari, Devendra Prasad Yadav, Uday Narayan Choudhary, Dr. Ramchandra Purve, Manoj Jha, Bhola Yadav, Alok Mehta, Tej Pratap Yadav, Anita Devi, Israel Mansoori, and Surendra Ram, among others.

Manoj Jha, a prominent figure in the RJD, seized the occasion to demand reservations in the private sector, underscoring the need for inclusive policies to address societal disparities.

Lalu, in a reflective mood, shared anecdotes and memories related to Karpoori Thakur during his speech. The leader, addressing the gathering, repeatedly invoked the name of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. He reminisced about the era when Nitish and Tejashwi collaborated to expand the scope of reservations by conducting a caste survey. Lalu vividly recalled the challenges faced by Karpoori Thakur, emphasizing the unwavering support he provided during those times.

Lalu recounted an incident involving Shivchandra Jha’s harassment of Karpoori Thakur in the assembly, highlighting the pivotal role he played in rushing Karpoori Thakur to the hospital during his sudden illness. The leader nostalgically remembered the nationwide uproar following Karpoori Thakur’s demise and the poignant slogans raised during his last journey.

Reflecting on Karpoori Thakur’s personality, Lalu shared personal insights, including the late leader’s fondness for simple meals like corn bread and mustard greens. He acknowledged Karpoori Thakur’s vision for uplifting people, mentioning the encouragement given to him in the absence of the late leader.

Addressing the ongoing controversy surrounding Bharat Ratna, Lalu supported Tejashwi’s demand for recognizing the contributions of Ram Manohar Lohia and Kanshi Ram with the prestigious honor. He praised Kanshi Ram’s efforts for the Dalits and backward classes but expressed disappointment with Mayawati’s leadership.

Deputy CM Tejashwi echoed the sentiment of inclusivity and gender participation, noting the significant presence of women at the event. Tejashwi emphasized the importance of carrying forward Karpoori Thakur’s ideas, underscoring the ongoing struggle for rights. He thanked the public and socialist leaders for their support, considering the posthumous conferment of Bharat Ratna to Karpoori Thakur as a victory for the people.

Senior RJD leader Shivanand Tiwari cautioned against potential pitfalls associated with Bharat Ratna awards, cautioning against getting trapped in political maneuvers. Abdul Bari Siddiqui reiterated the belief that Karpoori Thakur would carry the wishes of the people to Delhi.

The centenary celebration not only honored the legacy of Karpoori Thakur but also served as a platform for RJD leaders to reiterate their commitment to the values and principles he championed. The event concluded with renewed calls for social justice and recognition of leaders who have left an indelible mark on the nation.
