Malaysia’s Monash University to Study Tharu Tribe in Partnership with Bihar’s BRABU

Monash University and BRABU launch a groundbreaking study into the intellectual and emotional world of India’s Tharu tribe.

Muzaffarpur: In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, Malaysia’s Monash University has partnered with Bihar’s Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BRABU) to study the intellectual and emotional life of the Tharu tribe in Bagaha.

Led by Prof Rajneesh Kumar Gupta, BRABU’s psychology department will survey 300 members of the tribe, focusing on their cognitive abilities, emotional resilience, and changing socio-cultural identity. A team from Monash will later join the fieldwork, following Prof Gupta’s visit to Malaysia to present initial findings.

The Tharu, an indigenous community found along the India-Nepal border, have largely been absent from global research. This study aims to bring their voices and experiences into academic focus for the first time.
