Monsoon Gains Momentum in Bihar; Yellow Alert Issued for 18 Districts

Lightning Strikes Kill Two in Bihar as Temple Sustains Damage

Patna: The monsoon has reactivated in Bihar, bringing hope for farmers and a much-needed change in the weather. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for rainfall in 18 districts across the state on Friday, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph.

While the rest of the state will see relatively normal weather, residents may experience mild humid heat with maximum temperatures ranging between 32°C and 36°C.

The IMD has urged people, particularly farmers and those in open areas, to stay cautious and seek shelter during thunderstorms to avoid lightning strikes.

Statewide Rain Likely from July 16

This year’s monsoon has been sluggish in Bihar, with poor rainfall during the last week of June and the first 10 days of July. This delay has severely disrupted the sowing season for paddy cultivation, especially in districts like Patna, Gaya, Nalanda, Bhojpur, and Aurangabad. Due to insufficient moisture, transplantation activities were halted, and farmers had to rely on private irrigation methods to sustain their fields.

However, there is some relief in sight. According to the IMD, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal, which could shift the monsoon trough line southward, directly influencing Bihar’s weather patterns. Once the trough line becomes active over the state around July 16, widespread rainfall is expected across most districts.

Rainfall Deficit Still a Concern

Bihar has recorded 52% less rainfall than normal so far this season. While the state should have received 275 mm of rainfall by now, only 133 mm has been recorded. This shortfall has affected agriculture, causing cracks in the fields and raising concerns over the crop cycle. However, officials remain optimistic that a revival of the monsoon will help normalize farming operations.

Weather Update: Last 24 Hours

On Thursday, overcast skies covered Patna, though no significant rainfall was reported. Light rain occurred in Lakhisarai, while Aurangabad was the hottest district, recording 35.4°C. In contrast, Gaya experienced a pleasant 27.5°C, the lowest maximum temperature in the state.

Patna Weather Forecast

For the capital, light to moderate rainfall is expected today. The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 35°C, with a minimum of 27°C. Humidity levels will remain high, ranging between 80% and 85%, making the weather muggy. Cloudy skies will persist throughout the day, with chances of light showers or drizzle in the afternoon, offering some respite from the heat.
