Monsoon Withdrawal Begins in Bihar: Dry Weather Ahead, Dam Breach Affects Villages in Muzaffarpur
Patna: The monsoon withdrawal has officially begun in Bihar, signaling dry weather across the state. According to the Patna Meteorological Center, no rain is expected today in any district, though some areas in eastern Bihar may experience cloudy skies. The transition is marked by the arrival of north-westerly winds, which will result in rising daytime temperatures and cooler nights.
Weather scientist SK Patel explained that low to medium-level westerly winds are entering the state, pushing out the monsoon. “Monsoon withdrawal typically occurs between October 10 and 13, and this year is no different,” Patel said. The Meteorological Department has confirmed the official retreat of the monsoon from Bihar.
This year, Bihar recorded 20% less rainfall than the seasonal average, an improvement compared to last year’s 23% deficit. “Despite the shortfall, rainfall this year was better than last year,” the department noted.
In a concerning development, the Bam canal dam in Kudhani, Muzaffarpur, broke on Friday morning, flooding two nearby villages and affecting over a thousand residents. Reports indicate that a leak in the dam was noticed days earlier, but no action was taken. The dam eventually gave way under increased pressure, causing significant damage.
Meanwhile, in East Champaran district, the Sikarhana River eroded a large section of a road in Jatwa Janerwa village. This has disrupted traffic between Sugauli, Ramgarhwa, Raxaul, and Banjaria, causing inconvenience to locals.
Over the past 24 hours, Banka district recorded 13.2 mm of rain, while Madhubani experienced the highest temperature at 36.5°C. Rohtas had the lowest temperature, dipping to 23.0°C. Patna remained relatively normal, with a daytime high of 34.2°C. While the monsoon has begun to withdraw, it remains active in some parts of Bihar due to air circulation, according to the Meteorological Department.
