Nalanda University Welcomes New Students with Soulful Sitar Recital

Rajgir: Nalanda University marked the beginning of its new academic session with a captivating sitar recital, celebrating the induction of its latest cohort of students. The event, organized by the university’s SPIC MACAY chapter, featured an enthralling performance by the esteemed sitar virtuoso Pandit Kushal Das, accompanied by the renowned tabla player Ujjwal Bharti of the Banaras Gharana. The event was held at the Sushma Swaraj auditorium, setting a serene tone for the year ahead.

Pandit Kushal Das began his performance with the evening raga Charukeshi, captivating the audience with an intricate alap that showcased the depth and beauty of Indian classical music. His mastery of the sitar was on full display, leaving the audience, including students from over 25 countries, spellbound.

The Vice-Chancellor (Interim), Professor Abhay Kumar Singh, addressed the newly admitted students, underscoring the significance of Nalanda University’s unique academic and cultural environment. He emphasized the importance of shared cultural heritage and the role it plays in shaping well-rounded individuals. “The rich tradition of Indian classical music continues to thrive in India today,” Professor Singh remarked. “Events like these are integral to the holistic development of our students, making them more sensitive and better individuals. We are grateful to SPIC MACAY for providing our students with the opportunity to appreciate India’s classical art forms.”

SPIC MACAY, the Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth, was founded in 1977 by Padma Shri awardee Professor Kiran Seth of IIT Delhi. The organization is dedicated to raising awareness about India’s cultural heritage and inspiring youth through various educational activities. Professor Seth, who visited Nalanda University during one of his solo cycling journeys this year, continues to be a driving force behind SPIC MACAY’s mission.
