Patna: Patna, once infamous for its pothole-riddled streets, has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years, thanks to a series of ambitious road development projects led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s government. With over Rs 9,200 crore invested into infrastructure, the capital’s road network now boasts modern flyovers, elevated highways, and a multi-layered road system that has revolutionized travel for both locals and visitors alike.
In the past four years alone, over half a dozen major road projects have been inaugurated, some of which were initially conceived six years ago. Notably, the JP Ganga Path, which has been under construction since 2013, is now one of the crowning achievements of this urban renewal. As a result, Patna’s once-dreaded roads have been replaced by smoother, faster routes that have also played a key role in boosting the state’s economy.
Among the completed projects are the 20.5 km JP Ganga Path along the southern bank of the Ganges River, the 6.5 km Atal Path linking R-Block to Digha, and the 2.2 km double-decker flyover on Ashok Rajpath. The 8.86 km Mithapur-Mahuli elevated road is another major development, while work continues on the 21 km Danapur-Bihta elevated road, which will further ease traffic to and from Buxar and Ara.
The Danapur-Bihta road, currently under construction, is expected to significantly cut travel time and offer a seamless connection to the Bihta International Airport once completed in 2026. In addition, the 1.2 km Mandiri drain road is nearing its completion and will be inaugurated in the coming months.
Milestones and Major Projects
Some of these projects were inaugurated in phases. In January 2021, Nitish Kumar inaugurated the Atal Path, the first of these large-scale road developments, which had begun in 2019. A year later, in June 2022, the first phase of the JP Ganga Path, known as Patna’s “Marine Drive,” was launched, with its final stretch slated for completion in April 2025. The Lohia Path Chakra, another significant initiative on Bailey Road, was inaugurated in October 2023, after construction began in 2016.
In 2025, two important projects were completed. On June 11, the CM unveiled the 2.2 km double-decker flyover, providing faster travel from Gandhi Maidan to Science College. A few days later, on June 16, the Mithapur-Mahuli elevated road was opened to the public, easing traffic on this previously congested route.
These infrastructural improvements have made a tangible difference for daily commuters. Traveling across Patna has become quicker and more convenient, with the new roadways allowing for smoother passage from Digha in the east to Didarganj in the west. The double-decker flyover has particularly benefited those heading to educational institutions such as Patna College and Patna Science College, reducing travel time significantly.
A Vision for Patna’s Future
Beyond the practical benefits, the Ganga Path has become a popular recreational space. The riverfront promenade, gardens, butterfly park, and walking and cycling tracks have transformed this area into a hub for relaxation. Patna residents and visitors flock to the Ganga Path on weekends, enjoying the newly developed amenities such as food courts and an urban haat for women. These developments reflect Nitish Kumar’s vision of not only improving connectivity but also enhancing the quality of life in Patna.
The government’s commitment to modernizing Patna’s infrastructure continues with ongoing projects, all part of a broader effort to bring the state’s capital into the 21st century.
