Nitish Kumar Transfers Rs1,200 Crore to 3 Lakh Families Under Housing Scheme

Patna : Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday transferred Rs1,200 crore as the first installment to three lakh families under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G). The transfer was made electronically from ‘Sankalp’ at 1, Anne Marg, the official residence of the Chief Minister.
During the event, Lokesh Kumar Singh, Secretary of the Rural Development Department, provided an update on the scheme’s progress. He stated that the initial target of 2.43 lakh houses under PMAY-G was achieved by September 2024. An additional target of 5.46 lakh houses was allocated by the Union Ministry of Rural Development on 27 January 2025, bringing the total number of houses sanctioned for Bihar in the 2024–25 financial year to 7.90 lakh.
Under the scheme, each beneficiary receives Rs1.2 lakh in three installments for housing construction. Of this, 60% is funded by the central government and 40% by the state government, with Bihar contributing Rs48,000 per beneficiary.
This is not the first such disbursement under PMAY-G. On 7 October 2024, C M Nitish had similarly transferred the first installment to 1.05 lakh beneficiaries, involving an expenditure of Rs420 crore.
In Wednesday’s transfer, each of the three lakh beneficiaries received Rs40,000, bringing the total disbursement to ₹1,200 crore. Over the next 100 days, the beneficiaries are set to receive the remaining Rs80,000 in two installments, along with additional financial support through other government schemes.
Each beneficiary will also receive:
Rs22,050 for 90 days of unskilled labour under MNREGA
Rs12,000 for toilet construction under the Lohia Swachh Bihar Abhiyan
In total, each household will receive Rs1.54 lakh, amounting to a cumulative Rs4,621.5 crore for all three lakh families in the coming months.
Speaking at the event, C M Nitish congratulated the recipients and urged officials to ensure the smooth implementation of the scheme. “The beneficiaries should not face any inconvenience. Government schemes must be executed efficiently so that people receive their due benefits without delay,” he said.
The event was attended by senior state officials, including Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, Rural Development Minister Shravan Kumar, Chief Secretary Amritlal Meena, and other key bureaucrats. District Magistrates and beneficiaries from across Bihar also joined the event via video conferencing.
