Patna : A man from Bihar has posthumously transformed the lives of six people in Gujarat through organ donation, after being declared brain dead following a workplace accident.

Chaman Lal, a 45-year-old crane operator originally from Babhangama Kalgiganj in Bhagalpur district, had been working in Surat when he fell from a crane on March 28. He was taken to hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him brain dead on April 1.

Following discussions with Donate Life, a local organ donation organisation, Lal’s family agreed to donate his organs. His kidneys, liver, heart and eyes were all harvested, ultimately benefitting six recipients across Gujarat.

A green corridor was created to transport Lal’s body from Surat to Ahmedabad within two hours, enabling time-sensitive transplants to take place. The initiative was coordinated by Nilesh Mandalewala, founder of Donate Life, who praised the family’s decision and said it would “continue to inspire others”.

Lal is survived by his three sons – Nitish, a first-year undergraduate at TNB College in Bhagalpur, and two younger sons, Sanjeev and Jaikant, studying in classes 10 and 9 respectively.

Vimal Jain of the Dadhichi Dehdaan Samiti in Patna arranged for the return of Lal’s body to his home in Bhagalpur. Jain also confirmed that the organisation would provide financial support for the education of Lal’s children.

“This act of generosity in a time of grief speaks volumes,” Mandalewala said. “It is a gift of life for those who were waiting in hope.”
