Pahalgam Attack: Media Urged to Exercise Restraint in Defence Reporting

New Delhi: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued an advisory to media organisations, news agencies, and social media users, urging caution and restraint when reporting on defence operations and the movement of security forces.

The advisory, released on Saturday, prohibits live coverage, the dissemination of sensitive visuals, and reporting based on “source-based” information during defence operations. It warns that such reporting could inadvertently assist hostile entities, compromise operational effectiveness, and endanger the lives of personnel.

Media Urged to Exercise Restraint in Defence Reporting

Highlighting past incidents such as the Kargil War, the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, and the Kandahar hijacking, the ministry underlined how unrestricted reporting had previously undermined national security. To prevent a recurrence, it directed that coverage should be limited to periodic briefings by authorised officials until operations conclude.

The government reminded media houses and digital platforms of their legal and moral obligations to protect ongoing operations and uphold national interests. Stakeholders were urged to exercise vigilance, sensitivity, and responsibility in their reportage.

The advisory is aligned with Rule 6(1)(p) of the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021, which restricts live coverage of anti-terrorist operations. The ministry warned that non-compliance could invite legal action.
