Patna: A woman employed as a teacher through the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) has been arrested for allegedly murdering her teenage son in Patna’s Barh area and attempting to destroy evidence by burning his body. The incident occurred on June 14 and was made public following a police investigation that culminated in a press briefing on June 19.

The accused, Roma Kumari, is originally from Araria district and was posted as a teacher in Barh. Her co-accused, Nirmal Paswan, principal of a primary teachers’ training college in Rohtas and a resident of Saharsa, is reportedly absconding.

Police investigations revealed that the 13-year-old boy had objected to his mother’s extramarital relationship with Nirmal, a man she reportedly met during a teacher training programme. Following a confrontation on June 14, Roma allegedly beat the child severely, resulting in his death.

According to Rural SP Vikram Sihag, Roma and Nirmal then attempted to cover up the murder. They reportedly transported the child’s body in a car to an isolated stretch near the Konhar bridge in Bedhna village. There, the body was dumped in roadside bushes and set on fire using an inflammable substance. The charred remains were discovered by police on June 15, triggering a probe.

Roma Kumari has since been arrested, while efforts are underway to trace and apprehend Nirmal Paswan.

The case has drawn public outrage, particularly after the boy’s father, Pramod Kumar Gupta, called for the harshest possible punishment for Roma. Speaking to reporters, Gupta alleged that his wife’s actions stemmed from a long-standing extramarital affair, and demanded that she be sentenced to death. “I knew she was involved in a relationship. But to murder her own son… She deserves to be hanged,” he said.

According to police, Roma’s children had repeatedly objected to her ongoing visits to Rohtas to meet Nirmal, which had become a point of tension within the family.

The investigation remains ongoing, with police pursuing leads to locate the absconding co-accused and verify further details surrounding the incident.
