Rising Rivers Raise Alarm in Patna as Flood Threat Looms

Rising water levels in the Ganga, Son, and Punpun rivers have put Patna on high alert, with authorities preparing for potential flooding as monsoon rains intensify.

Flood Alert Issued for Parts of Patna as Adjoining Rivers Swells Beyond Danger Mark

Patna: Patna is on high alert as water levels in the Ganga, Son, and Punpun rivers continue to rise, prompting fears of a potential flood in Bihar’s capital. The Ganga reached 48.14 metres at Gandhi Ghat on Wednesday—just 46 centimetres below the official danger mark of 48.60 metres—raising concerns among residents and authorities alike.

Monsoon rains have caused the river to swell rapidly, leading officials to ramp up preparations for a possible flood situation. The Punpun river, too, has risen to 47.68 metres in Shripalpur, while the danger level stands at 50.60 metres. Meanwhile, the Son river is surging near Koilwar, just four metres below its danger threshold.

The district administration has issued alerts across flood-prone areas, particularly in Diara and low-lying regions along the banks. Circle officers and block development officers (BDOs) have been tasked with closely monitoring the situation and ensuring that emergency measures are in place.

The Disaster Management Department has placed both the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) on standby. Rescue and relief operations are being readied as water levels inch dangerously close to critical marks.
