Patna Planetarium is set to launch immersive VR shows this May, offering virtual cricket matches, space journeys, and encounters with dinosaurs.

Patna: Cricket fans in Patna may soon find themselves watching matches not from their living rooms, but from the pitch-side — virtually, at least. Starting this May, the Patna Planetarium is set to launch a cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) experience that will transport visitors into immersive 3D worlds, combining entertainment, education, and high-tech innovation.

The new offering will allow visitors to slip on a VR headset and find themselves inside a cricket stadium, watching matches as if they were seated among the crowd. But the experience won’t stop there. Audiences will also be able to come face-to-face with long-extinct dinosaurs or journey into the farthest reaches of space — all without leaving their chairs.

Imaginary worlds, real sensations

Virtual reality, long heralded for its potential in gaming and education, is now being used to bring science and spectacle to the public in unprecedented ways. The technology uses a headset fitted with a screen and motion sensors, which track the user’s movements to simulate walking through, observing, or interacting with 3D environments.

Visitors to the planetarium will don these headsets and sit in specially-designed reclining chairs that tilt up to 120 degrees, allowing for a full-body experience that mimics the motion and perspective of the virtual setting.

New shows, new experiences

The planetarium is no stranger to innovation. Last year, it introduced two new shows — Voyager and Tree of Life — replacing previous programmes We Are Stars and Asteroid Mission Extreme. These shows blended science with storytelling, engaging audiences across languages: the opening and closing programmes were presented in English, while the core content was in Hindi to ensure wider accessibility.

The upcoming VR 3D addition is expected to be one of the most interactive yet, offering a powerful blend of education and entertainment for visitors of all ages.

A new frontier for public science spaces

This latest move places Patna Planetarium among a growing number of institutions worldwide embracing immersive technologies to captivate modern audiences. While it remains a place to learn about space and the cosmos, it now offers the chance to explore fantastical, lifelike scenarios — from the thunderous steps of a Tyrannosaurus rex to the buzz of a live cricket crowd.

With this initiative, Bihar is once again showing that when it comes to innovation, imagination is the only limit.
