Patna Set to Host India’s Second-Largest Cricket Stadium by 2028

The Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna will be redeveloped into a world-class cricket complex with a capacity of 40,000 spectators and a projected cost of Rs 500 crore.

Patna: Patna is poised to emerge as a major destination on India’s sporting map with the reconstruction of the Moin-ul-Haq Stadium, which will become the country’s second-largest cricket stadium after the Narendra Modi Stadium in Gujarat.

The redevelopment of the stadium is expected to begin by August 2025, following the completion of the detailed project report in March and the finalisation of the tender process. The stadium was leased to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for 30 years in December 2024.

The upgraded facility will accommodate 40,000 spectators and is projected to cost approximately Rs 500 crore. The construction is expected to be completed within three years, transforming the stadium into a state-of-the-art international cricket complex with facilities that meet global standards set by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and BCCI.

The project will include two international cricket grounds, modern player amenities such as a gym, spa, indoor practice area, fully equipped dressing rooms, practice nets, video analysis suites, and a seminar hall. Additional features include a board room, five-star hotel, clubhouse, restaurant, hostel, and courts for badminton and volleyball.

However, the redevelopment faces logistical challenges. The land earmarked for the project includes an underground metro station currently under construction. Additionally, the existing Kadamkuan police station and a Sai training centre will need to be relocated before construction can fully commence.

Officials from the Bihar Cricket Association are optimistic about the stadium’s future. President Rakesh Tiwari stated that the venue would not only be capable of hosting international matches but also large-scale events such as the Indian Premier League (IPL). Annual maintenance is estimated at around Rs 20 crore.
