Patna to Launch 150 Electric Buses for Pollution-Free Travel
Patna: Patna is set to lead Bihar’s transition to an eco-friendly transport system with the introduction of 150 electric buses. Replacing CNG vehicles, these buses aim to provide a cleaner, greener travel experience while reducing the city’s carbon footprint. If the initiative proves successful in curbing carbon dioxide emissions, the model will be replicated in Bhagalpur, Purnia, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, and Bihar Sharif.
Rollout Plan
According to the transport department, the buses are expected to arrive in Patna by March 2025. The initiative is part of a broader plan to introduce 400 electric buses across Bihar in phases, with more than 50% of them allocated in the first phase. Convergence Energy Services Limited has been tasked with supplying the vehicles.
Advanced Features
The electric buses will be equipped with advanced technology to enhance passenger safety and convenience, particularly for women. Features include:
– CCTV cameras
– Live tracking
– Panic buttons
These systems will be monitored from a central control and command room in Phulwari Sharif, ensuring prompt assistance during emergencies.
Financial and Operational Challenges
Despite their benefits, the high cost of electric buses poses a challenge. Uday Shankar, president of the Bihar Motor Transport Federation, noted that the price of electric buses is more than double that of diesel and CNG buses. Private operators are hesitant to invest without subsidies from the government.
Efficiency and Infrastructure
An electric bus can travel up to 250 kilometers on a single charge, which takes approximately one hour. However, mileage decreases in congested traffic. Currently, 22 electric buses are operational in Patna, with charging stations set up at the Phulwari Sharif bus depot. The depot can simultaneously charge four to six buses.
