Patna Zoo Mourns Loss of Two Animals in Two Days — Elephant Mala and a Gaur

Patna: Patna Zoo witnessed the deaths of two animals within 48 hours, raising concerns about animal care and health monitoring at the facility. Mala, a 55-year-old elephant and one of the zoo’s most iconic residents, died on Sunday, reportedly of a heart attack after battling prolonged illness.

Mala had been seriously unwell for several months. Her condition had deteriorated significantly — she had stopped eating, struggled to walk, and suffered from foot wounds and nail decay. Her viscera sample has been sent to the Indian Institute of Medical Research in Bareilly for a detailed investigation into the exact cause of death. Experts from across the country were consulted during her treatment.

Mala had been a part of the Patna Zoo since 1975, after being rescued at the age of 7. Known for her calm nature, she gave elephant rides to visitors until 2003 and remained a beloved attraction for decades. Even after the rides stopped, she was taken on walks through the zoo on Mondays, the facility’s weekly off day.

Special arrangements such as oil massages in winter and fountains in summer were made to ensure her comfort. She was honoured on Elephant Day and other special occasions. The zoo is now left with only one female elephant, Lakshmi, who arrived at the age of 12.

Just a day earlier, a female gaur died due to theileriosis, a parasitic infection. According to the zoo authorities, treatment had been ongoing for 20 days before the gaur succumbed to the disease.
