Patna: An innovative plastic waste management initiative from Patna took centre stage at a national exhibition held at Bharat Mandapam in Delhi on World Environment Day, highlighting the critical intersection of environmental action and women’s empowerment.
The event, organised to recognise and promote pioneering efforts in plastic waste management, brought together selected urban local bodies from across India. Among the featured models was Pink MRF (Material Recovery Facility), a project developed by the Patna Municipal Corporation in partnership with GIZ, the German development cooperation agency.
What sets this initiative apart is its women-led model. Entirely managed and operated by women, the Pink MRF demonstrates how sustainability efforts can be paired with gender-inclusive development. The project aims not only to address the growing issue of plastic waste but also to provide meaningful livelihood opportunities to women, positioning them at the forefront of urban sanitation efforts.
Officials and experts from various states visited the stalls, with many expressing appreciation for Patna’s dual focus on environmental sustainability and social inclusion. The initiative was selected for its unique model that merges cleanliness and empowerment, serving as a replicable template for other municipal bodies across the country.
The exhibition aimed to encourage knowledge-sharing and inspire similar models nationwide, reinforcing the message that environmental progress must also reflect social equity.
