Poetry Workshop and Poster Competition Held at Patna Women’s College
Patna: The Department of English at Patna Women’s College, in collaboration with Poesis, the Poetry Club, organized a Poetry Workshop in Carmel Hall on Friday. The workshop, titled “Endless Crow Noises: New Markers of Indian English Poetry,” was conducted by Prof. Jaydeep Sarangi, Principal and Professor of English at New Alipore College, Kolkata. Prof. Sarangi traced the evolution of Indian English writing, highlighting writers like Deen Mohammad and Abdullah from Patna, and described the current phase of Indian English poetry as “visible and vibrant.” He encouraged aspiring poets in Patna to write and publish their work.
During the workshop, Prof. Sarangi released his new poetry collection The Half Confession and a reprint of Poems of Chandalini, translated by him and Zinia Mitra. Following the workshop, a poetry reading session was held where students of the Department of English read poems from renowned poets. Sharanya read her self-composed work, while Sanvi, Stuti, and Medha read poems by Basudhara Roy, Lakshmi Kannan, Jaydeep Sarangi, and Sukrita Paul Kumar.
A poster competition on “Select Indian English Poets” was also organized, where students created posters of poets Jayant Mahapatra and Keki N. Daruwala. The competition was judged by Prof. Sarangi, and winners included Sanskriti, Aparajita, Shrishti, Manya, and Palak from B.A. Semester 4.
The event was coordinated by Dr. Deepika Tiwari, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Poesis, along with Dr. Prabhat Jha, Assistant Professor, Department of English. The event was attended by faculty members from various departments, including Dr. Tauseef Hasan, Dr. Shahla Rehana, Dr. Devina Krishna, Dr. Nikhila Narayanan, Dr. Sister Nelsa A.C, and Runa. Swati, an M.A. Final Year student, moderated the session, and Harshita delivered the vote of thanks. Rajshree and Shagun, as volunteers, assisted in organizing the event.
