Muzaffarpur: In a major crackdown on illicit alcohol trade, police in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district have seized over 9,000 litres of liquor concealed in sacks of lemons and hidden storage units, in violation of the state’s liquor prohibition law. The total haul is estimated to be worth around Rs. 15 lakh.
The coordinated raids were carried out across several police station jurisdictions, including Garha OP, Paru, Karja, Kanti, and Mushahari. One suspected smuggler has been arrested, while others involved in the racket remain on the run.
In one of the more audacious attempts, police intercepted a truck and a car at Patiyasa Chowk in the Garha OP area following a tip-off. Officers discovered 248 cartons of beer hidden beneath sacks of lemons in the truck and an additional 10 cartons in the car. The suspects fled the scene as police approached.
SHO Ashish Kumar Thakur confirmed that efforts to track down the absconding individuals have been intensified.
Elsewhere, in Paru’s Phuladh village, police discovered 100 litres of foreign liquor concealed in a bhusaul (a storage structure typically used for cattle fodder). The consignment was reportedly kept by a local resident, Raja Kumar, who evaded arrest after learning of the police’s arrival. “Raids are ongoing to apprehend him,” said Paru SHO Monu Kumar.
Meanwhile, in Mushahari village, authorities recovered 355 litres of liquor during a raid and arrested a man identified as Raja Sahni. In a separate incident, two youths were detained near the Pakadi bridge in the Karja area, allegedly in possession of foreign liquor transported on a motorbike, which was also seized.
