Police Officers Attacked in Violent Katihar Protest Over Power Supply, Two Dead

Katihar: A protest demanding improved electricity supply in Bihar’s Katihar district escalated into violence on saturday, resulting in two fatalities and multiple injuries, including police officers and electricity department staff.

The demonstration began peacefully near the electricity department office in Barsoi, approximately 100 metres from the local police station. However, tensions rose when a group within the crowd, reportedly comprising around 1,000 individuals, began pelting stones and attacking officials with sticks and bricks. Police officers, including the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), were among those injured in the assault.

In response to the escalating violence, police issued warnings and attempted to disperse the crowd using mild force. When these measures failed, officers resorted to firing in the air to protect themselves and the electricity department personnel. Despite these efforts, two individuals, identified as Khurshid Alam and Md Niyaz, sustained fatal injuries.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence. District Magistrate Ravi Prakash and Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar are overseeing the inquiry. Preliminary findings suggest that antisocial elements infiltrated the protest, instigating the violence.

The situation in Barsoi remains tense, with increased police presence to maintain order. Officials urge residents to remain calm and refrain from spreading rumours as the investigation continues.
